Iakoiane’s Vision for the Wolf Clan
In legends pass down, from one generation to the next it is said that in the ethereal dawn along the tranquil waters, three resilient Haudenosaunee women embarked on a sacred journey to determine the fates of the matrilineal clan system. As the night whispered its secrets, these guardians of tradition awaited the revelation of the clan animals. This first canvas “Iakoiane’s Vision for the Wolf Clan,” one part of a triptych, captures the essence of that pivotal moment the first of three Iakoiane’s (meaning Clan Mother’s) sees the wolf.

In the lands of the Kanien'kehá:ka, known as the Mohawks, there is an esteemed woman known as the Iakoiane. In this painting Iakoiane is the Turtle Clan Mother. She is regarded as the wise and benevolent guardian of her community. The Turtle Clan Mother possesses deep knowledge of ancient traditions and sacred customs. She garners respect for her unparalleled wisdom and the ability to make informed decisions for the welfare of her people. Members of the Turtle Clan often seek her advice and assistance in times of doubt and difficulty. Her wisdom acts like a protective shell, enveloping her clan in comforting warmth. The Turtle Clan Mother embodies the harmony between humanity and nature, guiding her people on the path of truth, peace, and prosperity. Her duty has been passed down from generation to generation, from ancient times to the present day, serving as a reminder of the importance of listening, wisdom, and love for Mother Earth.

The Otter’s Gift to Mother Earth
This painting portrays a pivotal moment in the Haudenosaunee creation story. At the heart of the narrative lies the charming and resilient otter, who takes center stage in this artwork. The painting depicts the pregnant sky woman carrying twins gracefully descending through a celestial void, her flowing hair and suspended body are caught in an eternal fall. As she emerges from the sky world, a vast ocean stretches out before her eyes, stirring a mix of both wonder and uncertainty. In the foreground, a majestic turtle stands tall, its immense size reminiscent of ancient wisdom. As the story goes, seeking to comprehend the mysterious sky woman, the turtle calls upon an array of animals from the earthly realm to gather around. The collective curiosity of these creatures, their eyes fixated on the sky above sends a flock of birds to aid the sky woman. In this painting, heroically the otter with great determination in this agile creature fearlessly dives into the depths of the ocean, searching for the earth that will become the foundation of Mother Earth herself. The otter's lithe body navigates through swirling currents, its shimmering fur reflecting the vibrant underwater world along with sturgeon and yellow perch. In the story the otter resurfaces, holding the precious earth in its paws, a transformation of the turtle into our beloved Mother Earth occurs embodying strength, resilience, and an eternal connection to the natural world. "Guardian of the Depths" serves as a visual tribute to the powerful role of the otter in the Iroquois creation story. In this nature scene retelling our ancient creation story the otter becomes an emblem of courage and determination, reminding us of our deep-rooted interconnectedness with the Earth and the animals that call it home.

The Flying Head
In the Kanien’keha - Mohawk legend of The Flying Head, a fearsome creature plagued the Iroquois people. This monstrous being had wings like a bat, talons, and thick hair resembling that of a buffalo. One day, it approached a woman cooking and eating acorns. Believing she was consuming live coals, the creature was terrified by her apparent supernatural power and fled, never to trouble them again. The Iroquois community breathed a collective sigh of relief, grateful for the woman's unwitting ability to ward off the menacing Flying Head with her simple act of cooking and eating acorns.
